High End Pleasure Boat Throttle Control
This unique project was brought to CSI keyboards by a company that both designs and manufactures state-of-the-art yacht propulsion and drive systems. They reached out to CSI after exhausting their efforts with other keypad manufacturers whose designs and prototypes did not meet their expectations. These competing suppliers used outdated components such as Electro Luminescence and Fiber Optics for backlighting the nomenclature and indicators, as well as printed silver ink on polyester for the membrane switch itself. These design concepts lacked not only uniform lighting but also the durability necessary due to the open air environment that the keypad would be subjected to.
CSI worked with the marine control company to design and manufacture a new plastic support housing, and incorporated an elastomeric overlay which not only enhanced the aesthetics and tactility, but also created a much better option for sealing the keypad components from the harsh marine environment. A gold plated, etched circuit, replaced the polyester based circuit allowing for greater design flexibility and creating a more rugged product. The final key to the success of this project was the use of long life, high intensity LED's for the backlighting of the unit.
Below is a list of the key issues and needs that were identified by our customer:
- Uniform lighting of nomenclature
- No light bleed from blue arrows to white nomenclature
- Pronounced tactility
- Completely sealed
- Robust design
- Esthetically pleasing
CSI Keyboards reached, and in several cases, far exceeded their expectations. This type of difficult design is where CSI surpasses the capabilities of our competitors.
